Understanding VC: #28 Yinglan Tan and Linh Dang on the entrepreneurial journey of Edmicro with Insignia Venture Partners, Linh’s insights on the Vietnamese ed-tech matrix, and Yinglan’s perception of the product-service dichotomy of the VC industry

Our 28th episode was the first in a series of experiments to diversify our podcast in terms of not just ethnicities but also ingenuity. In this episode, we talked to Yinglan Tan, Founding Managing Partner at Insignia Ventures Partners, and Linh Dang, Co-Founder at Edmicro Education Co., Ltd. A conversation with this pair of an entrepreneur and a VC who are currently associated brought some fresh insights to the table, relating to the nurturing of a startup-VC relationship, the methods of sustaining it, and some ways to ascertain a successful investment experience for both the parties.

We began the conversation with a brief discussion of Yinglan and Linh’s career backgrounds which began in very different fields but eventually converged in the Vietnam startup ecosystem. As it is illustrated by numerous founder stories that a chance meeting can go a long way was reiterated at the start of their journey. A shared interest in entrepreneurship and curiosity regarding the evolution of the Vietnam startup ecosystem compelled Linh to come up with the idea to create Edmicro, and Yinglan to invest in it.

Linh’s extensive corp of knowledge in education and technology played an indispensable role in the building and success of Edmicro. Owing to his knowledge and keenness in this specific sector, Linh managed to embody the ideal ‘founder-product fit’, which Yinglan swears by for a successful startup.
